Green smoothies are one of my favourite things. Recently they have become popular but some of us have been drinking them for years! They are a very easy way to get extra fruit and vegetables into your diet, in a form that is convenient and delicious.

There are many, many different recipes available to be used to make a green smoothie but here is one of my favourites.

It is perfect for those who are just starting out making smoothies and don’t want anything too bitter in their smoothie such as kale. It can also be adapted very easily to suit the tastes of young kids, simply by adding more banana or apple, or whichever fruit they prefer.

What you will need:

1 cup greens (any greens are suitable but I usually recommend you start with spinach leaves as they are quite bland and younger children won’t be able to taste them).

1 cup water

½ green apple

½ pear

½ banana

½ cup mixed berries (can use frozen).

If you have a powerful blender you can simply put everything into it and mix. If your blender is a less powerful one, blend the greens and the water together first, until they become liquid and then add the rest of the ingredients. This way the greens will properly break down and not be stringy.

A smoothie can be made the night before for a quick breakfast, but be aware any smoothie made with berries will be a pretty pink for the first hour and then rapidly become a brown colour that will still taste good but not look as attractive.

This particular one has a slightly sweet taste and has no bitter after taste and as such most kids find it delicious. It is a great way to boost both their daily fibre and nutrient levels if they like a smoothie.

For a different smoothie more designed to boost your immunity try the same recipe as above but instead of banana and mixed berries, add half a lemon and a big chunk of ginger. This is my personal favourite as it is so refreshing. If you find that it isn’t thick enough for your taste without the banana, add a quarter of an avocado. Yum!
