I love chia pods. They are incredibly simple to make and tasty to eat. They are also packed full of good nutrients such as omega 3’s, protein and lots of fibre so it’s nice to know something you love is also really good for you. They look a little like a cross between yogurt and rice pudding, and have a hilarious wobble to them but once you get over their oddities you will love them. They make an ideal afternoon snack or a “dessert” on an evening when you feel like something yum after dinner.

Chia pods can of course be found at the supermarket but at over three dollars each, why not experiment and make your own. You only need about 15 minutes, and some small jars to put the mix into…old peanut butter jars will do. Small mason jars are also great.

Let’s get started….

To make vanilla and cinnamon chia pods you need:

1 cup and 2 tablepoons of unsweetened vanilla flavoured almond milk.

¼ cup chia seeds

1 and ½ tablespoons honey

½ teaspoon cinnamon.

To start pour the milk into a bowl and then sprinkle in the chia seeds. Stir together well and then add in the cinnamon and honey. Let it sit for about five minutes and then pour the mixture into the jars you will be using. Refrigerate the jars for 8 hours and then enjoy.

If you have a sweet tooth you may wish to add a little more honey to the mix.

If you prefer the taste of berries to honey and cinnamon…..try this version.

You will need:

1 and ¼ cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk

¼ cup chia

¾ cup of berries

Honey to sweeten if you like.

To make, put both the milk and the berries into a blender and blend. Once done pour the mix into a bowl and add the chia seeds. Taste a little and see if you need to add some honey. I prefer it without but the kids like a little. Let the mix sit for a few minutes and then pour into the jars you want to use. Refrigerate for 8 hours until set. Enjoy!
