I spend a lot of my time in clinic talking about the difference between good quality and poor quality supplements. Each time a manufacturer makes a vitamin supplement they have a choice as to what type of ingredients they put in that supplement and also the base they use which holds the vitamin or mineral together.

Poor quality supplements are made with ingredients that are very hard for your gut to absorb and can often cause discomfort or occasionally side effects.
Good quality supplement are made from ingredients designed to be absorbed and tolerated well by your gut so you can experience the full benefit of the supplement.
To tell the difference between good and bad supplements is difficult.

Labelling laws in Australia are dreadful. A manufacturer can label a product with double strength! Or “high quality” but unless you know what you are looking for you may find that the double strength magnesium you just bought seems to upset your stomach terribly as it is comprised primarily of cheap magnesium that your body can’t deal with, and although there may have been 300mg of magnesium in one tablet alone you may also find you have probably absorbed about 10 % of it and do not feel better at all.

Be mindful when you buy supplements and ask for expert help when you need it. Naturopaths are experts who are trained to know which supplement is a good quality one and worth the money and which are not. Help is out there!
